Presenter: Dr Lucy Johnstone (British Psychological Society, Clinical Psychology Division)

Watching the webinar will bring attendees up-to-date with current advancements in helping people in distress, namely alternatives to psychiatric diagnosis.

Dr Johnstone explores the appeal of psychiatric diagnosis for some people, institutions and organisations but presents concerns about the medicalising of distress, about seeing patients with illnesses rather than people with problems. She presents the British Psychological Society’s (Clinical Psychology division) alternative to psychiatric diagnosis called The Power Threat Meaning Framework acclaimed by a huge number of psychiatrists and psychologists internationally. This is a trauma informed model showing how given the trauma history context of a person’s life and the meaning they gave to the bad things that happened, their mental health issues make perfect sense.   PTMF commonly uses psychological formulation, mentalisation and collaborative sense making in the hearing of people’s stories, backed by a mass of evidence based research showing how their effectiveness  in the alleviation of distress.

Additionally, Dr Johnstone will focus on how can we help people who’ve been stuck in the psychiatric system for years, so many lives at a standstill for decades, with an endless cycle of medication and diagnosis and no one ever hearing their story, so there is no recovery process from the original trauma

There will also be focus on medication and the need to be honest with people about what medication can and can’t do and the impact on mind, brain body with specific reference use of psychiatric drugs with children and young people.
